You might be asking yourself…who is this guy running for Mayor?

Well, I am a lifelong Tacoma resident. My ancestors arrived in Tacoma in 1908 from Norway and we’ve been here ever since! Both sides of my grandparents’ families were very talented artists and inventors and creative types. They inspired me, greatly, while growing up.

My first memories of life were on base at Fort Lewis. My father was a Captain in the Special Forces Green Berets. He raised me with a strong sense of service and a passion for the rule of law and love for our country. He taught me about the military’s many levels of defense for America, especially in the defense of the Constitution, freedom of speech and our right to protest oppression.

Dad was a great guy. He was an incredibly talented man. An actor, a singer, a musician. He really could do anything and he taught me to have that same mentality. ANYTHING can be yours, you just have to take action to get there. My mother was an equally great human being who taught me about love and compassion for others and to always stand up for those who were underserved. I have three siblings, Krista, Devon and Summer. We were raised to love our neighbor and our fellow human beings. We lived a very humble life but a life of deep meaning for which I will be eternally grateful.

I grew up in Tacoma’s North End, in a modest home on 15th and Anderson. My days were spent riding my BMX bike all over this city, along 6th Avenue and a lot of time at the University of Puget Sound, taking in all the beauty of Tacoma. I knew my way around Tacoma before I could drive, exploring this city like crazy. I attended Grant Elementary, Jason Lee Junior High School (now Hilltop Heritage) and Tacoma’s crowned jewel, “The Brown Castle”, Stadium High School. I will forever be a Tiger.

My first job ever was working at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor at the Tacoma Mall. Then, I was a racquet stringer and sneaker slinger at Scott’s Athletic. So many great athletes walked through those doors every day. I got to know so many fellow athletes there, through the years. After high school I took a shot at Pierce College but soon found out, I honestly had no desire to continue to be a student. I did not feel like I fit in at all. Rather than stay in an uncomfortable situation, I left in search of who I would be. What great adventures I could find.

I dabbled for a couple of years in construction since it came very easily to me. Some things you just get and for me, that was always construction. But an opportunity came my way that I felt compelled to tackle, so I put what was easy on the back burner, for the time being.

I found my way into working for the Tacoma School District as a substitute Para Educator, eventually taking a gig at Gault Middle School. I was filling in for a staff member who was put on administrative leave and found myself in love with the school, the staff and the students. It was a perfect fit! At the end of the school year, the position was dissolved but Principal Cherry Goudeau went out on a limb to keep me at Gault. She created a position for me as a Conflict Resolution Counselor. I was in heaven! THAT was one of the most fulfilling jobs I had ever had and I felt so accepted by the entire community.

While still working at Gault, I had also been bartending at a place called Drake’s in downtown Tacoma. Since I had summers off, it was a great place to earn some extra money and I had a blast!

Two doors down from Drake’s, a television production company had moved in and I soon met the Hume Family. After a month of knowing James Hume, he asked me one simple question… “Have you ever thought about shooting a television show?”  Without hesitation, I immediately answered, “Absolutely!”  I was off on my next adventure, shooting Ed Hume’s Gardening In America.

James would become my best friend, Best Man and now Campaign Manager. The Hume’s are responsible for so many things in my life. Their mentorship has guided me to so many places and opportunities that I never would have otherwise had. They got me involved in many events and causes throughout Tacoma. Film Festivals, art shows, music, short films, television.

Myrna Hume was the first to tell me, some 30 years ago… “YOU are going to be mayor of Tacoma someday. Mark my words!” And she stood by that claim for decades, leading me down the pathway into politics. There wasn’t a time that she and the rest of the Hume’s weren’t helping me along the way, to learn more and more about the power of DOING, not just talking.

Anyone can talk the talk but words are nothing without action. If you want to do something, you’ve got to get your hands dirty and get after that goal!

Soon, Ed Hume would retire from shooting shows and I found myself headed back into the world of construction. I always knew that it paid well and that it also came so easily to me. It didn’t take long before I was a Construction Superintendent, climbing my way up from custom homes, to mega homes and into commercial construction.

I was full of ambition, drive and tenacity, when at the age of 30, I became a father to the most amazing son a parent could ever ask for, Trent Harrison Haverly.  He brought so much joy into my life and he and I were off and running together! Months after he was born I received an offer that I could not refuse. To be Lead Photographer for a tech start-up called Gear.com. I worked my way up into the Store Operations Department, training other photographers at our east coast shipping center. We had merged with another up and coming startup called Overstock.com. I was being groomed to lead their product photography department but that would mean I would need to relocate to Salt Lake City… but there was no way that I was going to see my son only a couple times a month, so I had ultimately declined. Though that was a multi-million dollar proposition, due to stock options, I was not going to let down my Son and be a part-time father. So, back to construction I went, working for a developer for a few years, working my way up into larger homes, then commercial construction and land development. When, once again, I was offered a job that I could not pass up as Director of Construction for a lifestyle shopping center called Uptown Gig Harbor. A huge undertaking but I dove in head first and loved every minute of that project. Over 500,000 square feet of shopping where I was able to put my signature on every square inch of the place, thanks to the owner, John Hogan who gave me free rein much of the time. I really appreciated the opportunity that he and his mother Evie gave me.

I would continue in land development for years. Climbing higher and higher, taking on bigger projects and always striving to learn as much as I could about every person and every trade involved. My desire to climb to higher heights compelled me to seek out the most elaborate projects and companies imaginable.

While in the pursuit of the next biggest mountain, I never stopped my love for television production and being involved in short films. I would work construction to pay the bills, but my creative juices carried me back into television. I started a production company to feed my passions. That soon became an obsession as I found myself working with some of television and movies biggest stars. I was certain that I was going to be a success and that I would be able to fulfill my dream of getting to create television magic and earn a living as a producer. When Hollywood chewed me up and taught me a lot of very tough lessons, I picked myself up, dusted myself off and Trent and I were determined to put that period behind us.

In early 2014, I met the most amazing woman that I have ever known…Kelli.  She was the spark that we needed. The missing link to our happiness! Together, the three of us set off to write our own story as a happy little family! Kelli and I were married in December of 2015 and have been on an adventure ever since!

I knew that I was going to get back into construction, and that I was going to go all in, so I sought out the best company who would challenge me more than ever before. Building the best of the best, the wildest designs from the most demanding architects in the area, if not the world. I found that in a Seattle company and soon was pushing myself further than I had ever imagined. I was involved with some of their most notorious projects in just a few short years. Everywhere from Medina to the Hollywood Hills. Our little family of three was running on all cylinders and clicking and striving. Of course, there were growing pains along the way but with determination and grit, we grew together and thrived! In 2016, I signed on for a project that would take us to the Big Island of Hawaii for over a year, building what I believe to be one of the coolest designed homes I have ever had the pleasure of being involved with - an Olson Kundig design, called Hale Lana.  During my time with that company, I worked on some of the most significant projects in the Seattle area. My resume was growing and I had conquered every goal that I had set for myself, professionally.

In 2019, we welcomed our beautiful little girl Sharla Ann into the family, filling our lives with so much joy and laughter!  She’s brought so much to our life! With our ever growing family, I knew that I could no longer continue to commute over a hundred hours a month up to Seattle and I was determined to find something close to home so I could spend that much needed extra time with my family. My decades of leadership in construction management led me to Westmark Construction. A commercial construction company where I was hired as the General Construction Superintendent. Essentially charged with leading our Superintendents and crews on as many as twenty or more jobs at any given time, from beginning to end. I love my job and the people with whom I work, every day. We are a cohesive group of hard working people who also like to have fun while we work.

Being Mayor takes someone who strives towards accomplishing goals for us all. Someone with grit and determination who knows how to lead people and council members. Someone with a proven track record of success and perseverance. It takes someone who can communicate with others to get the most out of their talents and see things through to completion. In the world of construction, you cannot survive if you do not see things through to completion. There is no such thing as failure. The job has to be completed or you will no longer be employed. I have learned so much through construction about what it takes to see things through to fruition. As Mayor, you need varying experience in multiple fields and the ability to adapt to our ever changing world. I feel strongly that I have the adaptability to wear many hats and lead the way for change in Tacoma.

My life has brought me to this point. Every step of the way, I have strived towards success and building relationships. Strengthening bonds and growing as a person. I truly believe that I have what it takes to be a great Mayor for everyone in Tacoma. My love for this city and the people living here is unsurpassed and I will do everything in my ability to earn your trust, listen to your hearts and see to it that Tacoma gets stronger and happier throughout my tenure as your mayor.

I truly appreciate your time.

Sincerely,

Steve Haverly
